It's ten days to Rogue launch. Are you ready? Don't worry ... you can't possibly be.

The purpose of the Rogue Performance Festival is to create new, live experiences that are inherently unpredictable.

Every year, creating the Rogue Festival is an all-new, ongoing adventure in managing the spontaneous, controlling the unruly, planning for unforeseen circumstances and herding cats.

And, if successful, the Rogue transmits that same sense of only slightly controlled chaos to the audience. The Rogue is dedicated to the proposition that art should be dangerous and untamed, unsettling and disturbing, surprising and delighting.

The goal of the 2006 Rogue Performance Festival is to amaze you, the audience. If you're already ready for what this festival will be, we haven't done our jobs.

Still, the Rogue Festival was created by a Boy Scout, so we do embrace the motto "Be Prepared." So we have prepared a comprehensive website to better help you chart your own Rogue adventure.

Look for full show descriptions, showtimes and helpful road maps to all Rogue venues on the all-new 2006 Rogue Festival website, www.roguefestival.com.

The Rogue BYO workshop will be held this 6:30 PM Thursday, Oct. 20 , at Javawava, 1940 N. Echo, (across from Fresno High). Light refreshments will be served!

What is a BYO (Bring Your Own Venue or Bring Your Own Gallery)? How do you set one up? What can you do to succeed as a BYO? These and other questions will be explained in this 1 hour workshop. This is a great opportunity to use the Rogue to showcase and kick off your Arts year 2006!

Tim has since moved to Boulder, Colorado for post graduate work. The show he premiered at Rogue 2003 has won several awards and has been published as a book. Perhaps he will re-mount the show at the new Boulder Fringe that starts up next week.

Patrick released a limited edition DVD of his show that was taped at his final performance at Rogue 2004. He has continued touring and developing his show. This July his show played at the Lamb's Theatre, Off-Broadway to great reviews.

Eccentric, Eclectic Fringe Festival Opens

EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) - Thousands of thespians, comedians, musicians and even mimes descended on the Scottish capital Sunday for the opening of the Edinburgh Fringe - the world's largest arts festival, and arguably the most democratic.

At the Fringe, anyone can register, pay a fee, find a venue and put on a show. That means a raucously diverse program whose 1,800 shows encompass college revues, up-and-coming bands, star comedians and avant-garde theater.

Where else could a U.S. high school production of "Footloose" share a program with a rap version of "The Canterbury Tales" (which also played the Rogue 2005 Festival) and a musical about a presidential assassin?

This year, many of the performers have war, terrorism and politics on their minds.

"This year is, by common consent, the most political Fringe for a long time," said the festival's director, Paul Gudgin. "It's not just theater. It's the comedians, dance, musical theater - we've got musicals about the war on terror."

Indeed, the program includes "Terrorism: The Musical,""Apocalypse: The Musical,""Lee Harvey Oswald: The Musical" and "The Brighter Side of Alzheimer's" - needless to say, a musical.

Then there's "Guardians," an avowedly provocative look at media responsibility and the abuse of Iraqi prisoners.

"Some nights we have audiences roaring with laughter and some times they look a bit ashen and shocked," said producer Katrin MacMillan of the preview performances.

Audiences seeking something more classical can chose among seven productions of Shakespeare's "Macbeth." On a literary note, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" author Louis de Bernieres will appear - to play the mandolin.

The Fringe, which runs through Aug. 29, is the biggest in a group of arts festivals that draw 750,000 visitors to the Scottish capital every August. Later in the month come the book festival, the film festival, the Military Tattoo and the high-culture, invitation-only Edinburgh International Festival, which spawned the breakaway Fringe in 1947.

The upstart festival went on to launch the careers of countless performers, including members of Beyond the Fringe and Monty Python's Flying Circus, actress Emma Thompson and "Mr. Bean" creator Rowan Atkinson.

Today the Fringe dwarfs its older sibling, and there have been calls for the two to unite. Gudgin rejects the idea, saying Edinburgh's strength lies in its "confederation of independent festivals." He said the events' relationship was "a healthy mix of competition and collaboration."

Critics say the Fringe is too big, too unfocused or too dependent on big-name standup comics. Some residents complain it takes over the city.

The Fringe takes in 300 venues, from theaters and auditoriums to churches, a hotel room and a department store. All month the Royal Mile - the cobbled main street beneath glowering Edinburgh Castle - is thronged with tourists, buskers and eager actors handing out flyers for their shows.

"It's a bit like your own birthday party," said Gudgin. "There's a moment at around 2 a.m. when you just want everybody to go home. But the next morning when you're alone with nothing to do but clean up the empty bottles, you miss them."

“Fire Breathing Drag Queen” by Enrique Lopez Is Selected for 2006 Rogue Performance Festival Muse

Iconic Symbol of Life, Passion and Artistic Identity to Be Unveiled at August 4th ArtHop at Ashtree Studios Music & Art Gallery at 1035 N. Fulton from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

July 29, 2005 — “Fire Breathing Drag Queen,” an oil painting by the late Fresno artist Enrique Lopez, has been selected to be the Rogue Muse of the 2006 Rogue Performance Festival, Festival organizers announced today. The Rogue Muse will be officially unveiled at ArtHop on Thursday, August 4, and can be seen at the Ashtree Studios Music & Art Gallery at 1035 N. Fulton from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday night.

The Rogue Muse, a graphic representation of the artist’s conception of inspiration, is the annually selected symbol of the Rogue Performance Festival, central California’s leading independent festival of the performing arts. Each year’s Rogue Performance Festival has its own unique Rogue Muse to symbolize that year’s unique diversity of performers and artists.

“Fire Breathing Drag Queen,” a large oil painting of a nightclub performer’s fire-breathing act, was selected to be the 2006 Rogue Muse from a field of 27 entries from local artists. “Fire Breathing Drag Queen” is one of the most famous works of late Fresno artist Enrique Lopez, who showed his artwork at the 2005 Rogue Performance Festival. All 27 entries will also be exhibited at this August ArtHop.

"From the moment I first saw Enrique's painting, I hoped it could be our Muse for 2006," said John Jordan, co-managing producer of the Rogue Performance Festival. "The image is vivid, dramatic, and audacious. It instantly evokes the carnival-like atmosphere of the Rogue and the festival's 'anything can happen' spirit," Jordan said.

“Enrique shows us that, whether it’s on canvas or on stage, art isn’t tame,” said Marcel Nunis, co-managing producer and founder of the Rogue Performance Festival. “Art is about surprising, challenging, and even confronting the audience. And that’s what the 2006 Rogue Festival will do – celebrate the bold and new.”

Enrique Lopez, artist and proprietor of the Art Box Gallery in Fresno’s Tower District, was a native of Delano and a graduate of CSU Fresno. His paintings reflected Lopez’s personal reflections on social and political issues, his Latino heritage, and his interest in magical realism. Lopez died earlier this year.

“Fire Breathing Drag Queen” can be seen on Lopez’s Web site .

The Rogue Muse provides a unified visual symbol for the Rogue Performance Festival, and will be featured on the 2006 Rogue Performance Festival poster, Rogue Map and T-shirts.

The 2006 Rogue Performance Festival will take place March 2-11, 2006, in multiple venues throughout Fresno. An 11-day celebration of the performing and visual arts, the Rogue Performance Festival is central California’s largest independent arts festival.
